Economist S Mahendra Dev has been appointed as the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM). Dev, who was an independent director on the board of Axis Bank, resigned from the position upon his appointment as EAC-PM Chairman. Currently, Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery heads the EAC-PM.
“I wish to inform that I have been appointed as Chairman of Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. Since this is a full-time position, I hereby tender my resignation from the Board of Directors of Axis Bank with effect from the close of business hours on 05/06/2025,” Dev wrote in a letter addressed to the Axis Bank board.
Dev is an expert in the fields of agriculture and rural economy, and also serves as the editor of the Economic and Political Weekly. He also serves as the chairman of the Institute for Development Studies, Andhra Pradesh. In the past, he served as the director and vice chancellor of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research and an independent director on the board of Kotak Mahindra Bank, among other roles at various organisations.
Dev did his PhD in economics from the Delhi School of Economics and his post-doctoral research in development economics from Yale University.
